2014 Filmmakers In Residence
Through the Filmmaker In Residence Program, the Woods Hole Film Festival offers filmmakers and the public alike the opportunity to learn from other filmmakers. The Filmmakers In Residence are selected based on their individual accomplishments within the world of independent film and whose body of work is significant and substantial. The Filmmaker In Residence Program is supported in part by grants from the Woods Hole Foundation and the Cape Cod 5 Cent Savings Bank.

Jay Craven
New England indie filmmaker Jay Craven has made seven feature films, five documentaries and an Emmy-winning regional TV comedy series for public television. His films include Northern Borders (2013 – w/ Bruce Dern, Genevieve Bujold, and Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick), The Year That Trembled (2002 – w/ Fred Willard, Marin Hinkle, Martin Mull) and his current picture, now in post-production, Peter and John which Craven shot this spring on Nantucket through his Movies from Marlboro program, where 20 professionals collaborate with 30 students from multiple colleges through a “semester away” at Marlboro
College. Peter and John stars Jacqueline Bisset, Christian Couslon (The Hours, Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets), Emmy-winner Gordon Clapp (NYPD Blue, Glengarry Glen Ross), Shane Patrick-Kearns (Blue Collar Boys), and Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black). The picture will tour extensively on the Cape and Islands during the summer of 2015.
Craven’s awards and recognitions include the Producers Guild of America’s 1995 NOVA Award for Most Promising Motion Picture Producer of the Year, the Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and selection to the American Film Institute’s first-ever AFI:Project 20/20, as one of 18 U.S. and international filmmakers to travel the world to screen and discuss their work. Festivals and special screenings include Sundance, South By Southwest, Lincoln Center, The Smithsonian, Cinemateca Nacional de Venezuela, Cinematheque Francaise, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and The Constitutional Court of Johannesburg.
Four of Craven’s films have played The Woods Hole Film Festival — and he will screen his pictures Where the Rivers Flow North (1994 – w/ Rip Torn, Tantoo Cardinal, Michael J. Fox) and Disappearances (2007 – w/ Kris Kristofferson, Genevieve Bujold, Gary Farmer, Charlie McDermott) as part of his residency at this year’s Woods Hole Film Festival.
Bryan Storkel
Bryan Storkel is an awardwinning documentary filmmaker who loves quirky characters and is fascinated by religious topics.
His first documentary, STRICTLY BACKGROUND (a film he shot and edited), studies Hollywood through the eyes of movie extras. It’s a dynamic exploration into the pursuit of stardom and the desire to stand out.
Storkel directed his first feature-length documentary in 2011. HOLY ROLLERS played at over 40 festivals and won 10 Best Documentary Awards. The film focuses on a group of pastors who run the largest organized gambling team in the country, taking millions from casinos.
In 2013, Bryan produced the documentary LITTLE HOPE WAS ARSON, the story of 10 churches that were burned to the ground in East Texas. The film sold at Slamdance and will be broadcast later this year on a major network.
In 2014, THE INTERNET’S OWN BOY (edited by Storkel) premiered at Sundance. It also went on to play SXSW and Hot Docs. He also edited the film ICE WARRIORS, which will be broadcast on PBS later this year.
His most recent film, FIGHT CHURCH is a feature documentary about the confluence of Christianity and Mixed Martial Arts. The film follows several cagefighting pastors in a quest to reconcile their faith with a sport that some consider violent and barbaric.
Storkel was born and raised in Seattle, WA and now lives in Los Angeles, CA with his wife and two daughters.
