MUSIC IN PICTURE: A Film Scoring Master Class with Evan Hodges, sponsored by Adam Audio

The goal of this immersive workshop is to educate directors and producers about how to communicate effectively with composers. It is vital for up-and-coming composers as well, so they learn how to avoid the pitfalls of convoluted themes and overscored cues that don’t serve the picture. Discussion points include: Themes and thematic development; Instrumentation and arranging; temp tracks; scoring from a script; dissection of a cue for an existing film.

DEFINING YOUR FORMAL APPROACH: A Master Class with Laura Nix, Filmmaker In Residence

Documentary isn’t a genre, but rather an umbrella term for multiple non-fiction practices. Filmmaker Laura Nix has directed five feature-length films and multiple shorts that employ widely different formal approaches, resulting in films which are quite different from each other. In this masterclass she will speak about the process she uses to determine her formal approach for each new film in the development phase, and how you can figure out the appropriate cinematic language for your film. Will you conduct interviews? Will you engineer situations to film or shoot cinema verité? Will you stage re-creations or scenes that involve techniques from fiction filmmaking? In your edit will you use archive material, or only original material? We suggest you watch a few of her films in advance to benefit the most from participating in the class.

A PRIMER ON IMMERSIVE AUDIO: A Workshop with Jay Sheehan, Garrett Audio

With the growing number of movie theaters around the country and world adapting Dolby Atmos screening rooms, the film industry as a whole has been migrating their workflows and deliverables to accommodate this new delivery format. In this workshop, we will explore what is Dolby Atmos, how it differs from traditional surround sound, what is needed to bring your project to the Atmos experience, and if you really need it. Join Jay Sheehan, Woods Hole Film Festival Board member, consultant, and owner of Garrett Audio, as he presents this workshop on navigating Dolby Atmos. Plus he’ll examine what the emerging filmmakers of today need to consider about adapting the workflow.

WHEN DOCUMENTARY VISIONS COLLIDE WITH FILMMAKING REALITIES: A Master Class with John Edginton, the Doc Doctor

Woods Hole Film Festival 2018/9 Filmmaker In Residence John Edginton returns to the Festival this year to offer insight and strategy to anyone who is currently making a documentary or is interested in making one. John is an award-winning British producer, writer and director of documentary films. He also acts as a Consultant Producer on a wide range of documentaries at various stages of development and/or production. HOW TO (VIRTUAL) FESTIVAL: A Workshop with Mark Stolaroff.

Producer Mark Stolaroff is an accomplished independent producer and an expert in micro-budget filmmaking. He is the Founder of No Budget Film School, a unique series of classes specifically designed for the no-budget filmmaker. Mark will lead an interactive discussion for filmmaker on creating a festival strategy and adapting to the dramatic changes in the landscape of film festivals and independent film.

CREATING A MEANINGFUL IMPACT CAMPAIGN: A Panel Discussion with Laura Nix (Inventing Tomorrow), Atsuko Quirk and Debby Lee Cohen (Microplastic Madness) and Dr. Sandra Steingraber (Living Downstream and Unfractured). This panel will focus on how to develop, fund and execute a successful impact campaign before and after a film is completed.

CASE STUDY: THE REUNITED STATES: A Panel Discussion with Ben Rekhi, Mark Gerzon, Joan Blades, Tru Peddigrew, John Wood, Jr., Pearce Godwin. Based on the book of the same name by Mark Gerzon, The Reunited States is powerful and deeply moving documentary about people who have dedicated their lives to depolarization and who are providing a framework for the rest of us to do the same. It urges audiences to consider that when it comes to polarization, we are all either part of the problem or part of the solution. This panel will examine the topic of Bridging Divides and Depolarization and will discuss how to make a documentary film about a broad social topic that will be of interest to varied audiences and that will ultimately be used as a learning and advocacy tool by different parties. THE ART OF ANIMATED VISUAL STORYTELLING: A Master Class with Patrick Smith. Award-winning artist and animator Patrick Smith leads a discussion about how animation can be used to interpret audio, narration, music, or any type of pre-recorded audio. Patrick is known for his metaphorical hand drawn short films, as well as his experimental stop motion films. His formative years were spent as a storyboard artist for Walt Disney, and animation director for MTV. Smith is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the New York Foundation of the Arts.

Science and Storytelling: How do you make a compelling film that also includes a complex science-based story that is accurate, interesting and accessible to a broad audience? Each year under the auspices of the Woods Hole Film Festival Film & Science Initiative, the Festival brings together scientists, filmmakers and screenwriters to discuss how to work together to make better films about science. This panel will focus on the soon-to- be released feature documentary The Social Dilemma and will include Director, Jeff Orlowski, Producer Larissa Rhodes and Neurobiologist Dr. Andre Fenton.
