John de Graaf began producing documentaries in 1977 and has directed over 40 films, 15 of which have received national primetime PBS broadcasts, including the 1997 hit, AFFLUENZA. He is the recipient of more than 100 regional, national and international film awards. His film Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty is screening in the Festival on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

This class will provide a look at his career in documentary film and touch on such subjects as: finding a story and a hook: using humor; assessing your audience; fundraising; characters, experts and opinions; to narrate or not to narrate; length and venues; distribution and basic budgets, and archival film and music.  He will show short excerpts from his many films to illustrate his points.  He will also focus on how he developed the story for Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty and his new film on Katharine Lee Bates.
