Qais Essar

Sunday, July 31st – 6:00 p.m.
Qais Essar
Redfield Auditorium (prior to the screening of “What Tomorrow Brings”)

Qais Essar, international artist, composer, producer, educator and experienced live performer, carries on the traditional legacy of classical Afghan instrumentation, as established by Rabab legend Ustad Mohammad Omar Khan, currently the tutelage of Grammy nominated Ustad Aashish Khan. A student of both classical and traditional forms of Afghan/Indian and western music, Essar is able to present the Rabab with a fresh new perspective. The richness of his classical music training and the depth of his responsibility to preserve the culture of his war-torn motherland make his music and narrative exceptionally compelling among young, independent musicians.

James Montgomery

Sunday, July 31st – 10:30 p.m.
The James Montgomery Band
Grumpy’s Pub, Palmer Avenue, Falmouth

When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he “brings it on home”. Whether it’s recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman, or fronting his hot band of thirty years, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters – James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells – at the legendary “Chessmate.” Over the years, he’s carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene.

Steve Poltz
Monday, August 1st – 10 p.m.
Steve Poltz
The Captain Kidd, 77 Water Street, Woods Hole

Immediately after the screening of “Running Wild: The Life of Dayton O. Hyde” stay for a short performance by Steve Poltz, who composed and performed the music for the film.

Poltz’ solo body of work is an impressive collection of ballads, rockers and uniquely melodic acoustic numbers that reflect his incomparable style of alternate tunings and savage finger picking techniques. Guitar geeks fall prostrate at his feet trying vainly to learn how to play his stunningly gorgeous and deceptively complex songs. To see him play guitar is a visual feast so frenetic that close proximity to his playing exposes one to risk of seizure.
